To help get you geared up for Halloween, we’ve created our official CostumeSuperCenter.com Halloween Countdown widget. Halloween is just around the corner and time is going fast. Join us in counting down to our favorite day of the year by adding our widget to your blog, website or social media profile.  Simply press the “Get Widget” button under the Countdown widget (shown on the left) and choose your application. If you don’t see your application you can still add the widget to your own site by copying and pasting the code from Widget Box

Why should I add this countdown to my site, you ask? Because the best part of this widget is that you can customize it to your liking by adding your own photos.  Your favorite childhood Halloween photos, pictures of friends, your kids, and your dog – whomever you choose can be featured on the widget. It holds 5 photos that change each time you refresh your page.  Share your favorite Halloween memories while counting down to the big day.  To change our photos to yours click the admin button in the lower left corner of the widget. Since it’s customizable specifically for you, you can put any kind of pictures you want on your countdown.

It may not feel like Halloween yet but the first signs of the Halloween season are evident. Art Mann Proves that America Loves Costumes All Year Round

Art Mann is the man! He hosts the show Art Mann Presents on HDNet.  As a huge fan of his show I love how he manages to find fabulous festivals across the U.S.A. that involve costumes, revelry and debauchery.  If someone is dressing up, drinking, partying, celebrating and then puking, Art Mann is there. He has demonstrated that grown-ups have a basic human need to look, feel and act silly once in a while.  My husband and I, like many others, live vicariously through Art Mann Presents.

Last night we watched Art Mann Presents as Art traveled to Reno for the Superhero Pub Crawl. For 3 years running, Reno has hosted The Superhero Put Crawl where visitors dress as superheroes, both popular and made-up, and drink their way from bar to bar in the name of charity. Yes, a good time was had by all. Remind me to go to Reno someday.

Some of the other episodes I have thoroughly enjoyed watching (and this is by no means a complete list) are:

  • The Gasparilla Pirate Fest – Tampa’s annual festival to celebrate the pirate invasion of Jose Gasparilla. For over 30 years, people dress as pirates and celebrate.
  • The Pimp and Ho Ball – sexy costumes and lingerie galore, not to mention all sorts or adult toys and naughty delights.
  • Halloween in Hollywood – Need we say more! Just imagine the craziness of Hollywood and an endless variety of Halloween costumes.
  • The Doo Dah Parade in Pasadena where marchers and spectators dress in costumes in honor of the arts, organized by the Light Bringer Project, a nonprofit Pasadena-based cultural arts organization.

I strongly suggest you check your local listings for the re-runs of these episodes on HDNet. For those of you who are more adventurous than me, I hope you have an opportunity to attend one of these events. If you do, be sure to get your costumes, accessories and props from Costume SuperCenter.

Art Mann and the wonderful partiers of these great United States have proven that costumes are fun all year round. People just love the opportunity to step outside the box and do something fun and crazy. Dressing up in costumes just seems to go hand-in-hand with having a good time. The show is a great vehicle to showing us that it’s OK to let our hair down and it’s good for the soul, even it is does give you a hangover.

No Fiesta Big or Small is Complete without the Margarita

July 17, 2009 in Special Occasions by Lara Burke

In my book, any time is the right time for a Margarita. And to me Margarita means Fiesta. This tasty libation is so much more fun when you enjoy it with friends.  Gathering together on the back deck with some delicious food and drink is enhanced ten-fold when it is combined with great music and happy company. Whether you want to have a small gathering of a few couples or an all out Fiesta take it from me, when it comes to the planning, I’ve got some great advice.

Let’s start with the small get together. Yes, entertaining should be kept simple but appear like you’ve prepared for days. Simple dishes make a huge impact when prepared and presented the right way. More about this in a minute. Let’s talk about the guest of honor, the Margarita.  When hosting a mini fiesta please, please, please don’t use bottled Margarita mix. With a small bit of effort the day before you will knock the socks off your guests with a drop dead good drink that blows that too sweet, too sour mix out of the water. Save the mix for the Fiesta Grande when guests want their drinks cold, fast and abundant.

For One Magnificent Margarita

3 oz. good tequila. I recommend Represado

1 oz. Triple Sec

2 oz. fresh squeezed lime*

1 oz. fresh squeezed lemon*

1 T agave syrup or simple syrup.

Tons of ice

Salt optional

Fill the Margarita glasses to the top with ice. A little of this stuff goes a long way.

*For the love of God, lemon and lime juice comes from lemons and limes NOT plastic bottles shaped like lemons and limes.

When hosting a fiesta pequeño I like to serve tapas style munchies. Here is one of my easy yet fancy favorites:

Summer Gazpacho with Shrimp (8 servings)

4 cups of Low Sodium Tomato Juice

6 ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped

1 Hot House cucumber, peeled, seeded, chopped

1 sweet yellow bell pepper seeded and chopped

2 stalks celery, chopped

1 jalapeno pepper, minced

1/2 red Onion, finely chopped

1 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley

1 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro

1 clove garlic, minced

1/4 cup red wine vinegar

1/4 cup olive oil

2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

2 Tbsp chopped fresh chives for garnish

Fresh Sour Cream for garnish

2 dozen steamed or grilled shrimp with a good squirt of lemon and Extra Virgin Olive Oil and sprinkled with some minced fresh parsley.

Dice all of the vegetables in a large plastic bowl. Use a hand immersion blender and give it about 4 quick pulses to add a different texture and some frothiness. Serve in bowls garnished with 3 shrimp, some chives and a dollop of sour cream. I like to make it a bit fancier and serve them in stemless wine glasses. Then your guests can decide whether or not they want to use a spoon.

Now, for the Fiesta Grande. Thankfully, my daughter celebrates her birthday in the summer and every year we turn her birthday into a block party of sorts.  We invite everyone on the cul-de-sac and make it an all day affair with food, drink, entertainment, and all the props and accessories for what ever theme we choose. Since we are talking about Fiesta, I’ll tell you about her 7th birthday which was a huge success, just ask any of the folks on Feather Lane. With friends and family we had about 75 guests. This particular fiesta included a buffet of Mexican pulled pork on tortillas, fajitas with all the fixings, dips, salads and a help-yourself nacho bar.  Margaritas were served alcoholic in a 5 gallon glass lemonade jar with a spout at the bottom and kids were treated to non-alcoholic frozen margaritas courtesy of The Margarita Man. Of course, we had Corona’s and cake too.

We entertained with Mexican music and decorations. I had several maracas lying around and everyone got a sombrero. Mexican costumes were optional and we had a few serapes around for decoration if anyone felt the urge to put one on. At 92 degrees in the shade the sombrero was a much more welcome costume accessory. The kids enjoyed swimming, limbo, games, an inflatable bouncer and a piñata. The grown-ups enjoyed a good time all around thanks to detailed planning, great weather and a bottomless container of margaritas.

The party drew to a close as the sun faded into the summer sky. I cleaned up and the moms took their kids home to get ready for bed. The men continued their love affair with sweet Margarita regardless of the fact that their wives all said enough was enough.

One last taste and…Siesta.

Buena noche Margarita delicioso hasta la fiesta siguiente

Feel the hot sand grains oozing between your toes as you walk. The sun is just setting on the horizon above the ocean and a shadow falls across the water giving it a romantic appeal. It’s a warm night in Hawaii and beads of sweat are trickling down your back. The water is enticing you just as the drum beats begin to sound, echoing across the water all the way to the moon and back to your feet. You begin to move them, slowly at first, then the fervor picks up and you are in full dance. It’s your first Hawaiian Luau and you are going to party tonight.

A Time for Angels

Little children are probably the closest thing to angels here on earth. When I think about occasions for which I would dress as an angel or dress a child as one, a special cause comes to mind. The search for a cure for childhood leukemia is very close to my heart.   I would consider it an honor to dress many little angels to inspire donations to save lives. My fundraiser would be for finding a cure and alternative means of treatment for leukemia.
