What to Wear to Work

April 27, 2009 in Historical Costumes by Mascarade Marla

Picking out what I’ll wear to work every morning is just a normal morning ritual, nothing spectacular and no big deal. It made me think; “What was it like someone back in the Renaissance era? What was it like for a Nobleman to prepare his outfit for the day?

Have you ever been to a Roaring 20s party? Would you know what to wear if you were asked to dress for that era?

Put on your Easter Bonnet for the Easter Parade

Make sure there are bows and frills upon it, so your Easter bonnet will fit into the tradition. As long as I can remember, people have been dressing up for Easter Sunday. This special day holds traditions such as attending church on Sunday dressed in your finest attire. In my youth, after church the parade was the festivity of the season. A feast followed the parade with lots of relatives coming to visit. I can still smell all that good food and the smells of the fancy new clothes we bought just for the occasion.

Of course, children might have a difference of opinion here. In their minds, I’m sure the Easter bunny and baskets filled with fruits and candies is far more important on their list of special Easter events. For those lucky enough to have gone on an Easter egg hunt, it would be tough to choose between the two.

Renaissance Faires are the Ultimate Costume Experience

March 4, 2009 in Historical Costumes by Ren Faire Reese

Renaissance Faires have been a fascination with me for a long time, exactly how long I cannot remember. Ever since my early childhood, I have been enamored with historical eras and with the clothing that the people wore. This historical time captivates my attention more than any other era.  As a faire enthusiast, I have the ultimate opportunity to experience wearing costumes from the renaissance era. It brings it all to life because everyone at these events is dressed up in style to match the character they have chosen.

Annie Oakley in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show

Annie Oakley Credits: Ca. second half of the 1880's poster for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show

The sun is settin’ in the distant western horizon. I climb down from my horse and brush the trail dust from my rawhide coat and boots. As I take a step, I feel the kink in my legs from settin’ atop my horse a might too long. So I stand for a spell and look off into the red gold sunset to watch the light fade slowly into the night.

With the Advent of Valentine’s Day my Romantic Heart Looks to Paris

February 13, 2009 in Historical Costumes by Ren Faire Reese

When I think of romance and high fashion I think of Paris. I attribute the high fashion evolution and all the romantic lines today back to Paris in the 1600’s. It seems to me that the Middle Ages were becoming a memory. No longer did men and women wear drab, shapeless clothing. Rather, they entered a new age of enlightenment – in thought and clothing style.

Early Twentieth Century Ladies Wore Glamorous Clothing

February 4, 2009 in Historical Costumes by Ren Faire Reese

Ladies in the early twentieth century wore very high fashion clothing. They dressed in long flowing gowns designed in soft pastel colors. These fashionable women carried parasols and wore very large hats that were decorated heavily. This era is one of my costume fascinations.
