Costume of the Week: Super Mario Brothers

October 26, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke

r883655As we wind down to Halloween one costume stands out as an oddball favorite. Superhero costumes are the usual favorites for Halloween but at the top of the list this year you will find an unlikely hero: an Italian-American plumber named Super Mario.

Before Mario hit the big time with is own game series he appeared as “Jumpman” in the 1981 classic game Donkey Kong. Nintendo Debuted Super Mario in 1983 and it has consistently been popular video game for over a quarter of a century. Millions of gamers from the age of 5 to 55 have lived in the virtual Mushroom Kingdom while embodying Mario in an effort to save Princess Toadstool (or in the newer games, Princess Peach). Combined, all the series of Mario games make it the best selling game of all time and Mario the most popular video game character in history. And as far as Halloween goes, Mario is the costume of the week, perhaps the boy’s costume of the year.

The Super Mario Brothers costume is a great likeness to the video character with his bright red shirt and blue overalls, big belly and oversized moustache. The costume features a hat, moustache, jumpsuit with attached shirt, gloves and inflatable belly. Costume SuperCenter retails it for $33.99.

Costume of the Week: Go Ga Ga for Lady Gaga

October 19, 2009 in Celebrity Costumes, Costume Trends by Lara Burke

gagaJust because you can’t find a Lady Gaga Costume doesn’t mean you can’t be Lady Gaga for Halloween. All sorts of costumes are possible when you think outside the box and use a bit of creativity.

Lady Gaga defines unique, unusual and creative. She has a style all her own with an anything goes, over the top attitude.  Here are two ways to transform yourself into Lady Gaga with some easy to find costumes and accessories.

Crazy over the top al la MTV awards Lady Gaga

  • 1. An ornate feather mask - Any crazy feather mask can be used. You can choose a mask that covers both eyes and that would be fine but you can also modify a mask so it covers only one eye, similar to the masks she wore at the MTV Awards.
  • 2. Glam outfit - I would go for elegance a la Hollywood Starlet. A red gown or black gown can be accessorized any way you want it. The perfect gown will have a high side slit.
  • 3. Feather boa - just because they’re so much fun! Wear it long or wrap it around your neck right up to your ears to frame your face in feathery fluff.
  • 4. A gorgeous blonde bombshell wig, big and full of body.
  • 5. Shoes - a glam gown with sexy thigh high boots or the biggest, baddest 6 inch platforms you can find.

Crazy, sleek and sexy Poker Face Lady Gaga

  • 1. A sexy black cat suit - if its tight and shiny it will work.
  • 2. Thigh high patent leather boots, preferably with platform heels
  • 3. A platinum straight blonde wig with bold bangs
  • 4. Black make-up - use the makeup to draw a bold lightening bolt over one eye with bold shadow on your eyelids.

Ideally, I’d go for a bustier that shoots pyrotechnics from the nipples but that would be dangerous so don’t try that at home!

Now you have to practice your dance moves and learn all the words to Poker Face, if you don’t already know them.  You’ll score big points for originality and have a winning Halloween costume.

The internet has gazillions of pictures of  Lady Ga Ga to work from in creating your own unique costume and everything you need is easily found. Have fun.

5 Tips for Being the Best Zombie You Can Be

October 13, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke

Zombies are hot this Halloween.  The only way to truly become a zombie is to be eaten by a zombie. Short of that, you will need a costume, makeup and attitude. Here are the 5 tips you need to master being the best zombie you can be:

 60461cc

  1. The right clothes or costume - Tattered and torn clothing seems to be the look of choice but don’t limit yourself - you can be zombie Marilyn Monroe or zombie Elvis. And how about zombie Michael Jackson a la Thriller? Whatever you choose, don’t be afraid to get it a bit bloody.
  2. The right makeup - The great thing about being a zombie are the endless possibilities when it comes to make up. A zombie looks something between the grim reaper and a person who has been mauled by a bear then left to rot in the sun. So think hanging, rotting flesh, exposed bone, bulging eye sockets, maggots, pale skin and the like. Here is an awesome link to the annual Zombie Pub Crawl in Minneapolis that gives great make up tips among other important Zombie FAQs.
  3. The walk - remember your undead. Don’t walk like you just woke up from a restful nap. Consider dragging a leg, stammering or walking stiff-legged with your arms out in front of you. A jerk or twitch adds character too. Put your own style on it.
  4. The talk or should we say the moan -  Think low, guttural moans with occasional growls. Remember, zombies are mindless and devoid of rationalization.  Here’s your chance to stop thinking and just go with it.
  5. The company you keep - Zombies have power in numbers.  Get all of your friends to dress in zombie costumes too. You can have your own “night of the dead, ” Zombie Ball or Thriller Party. It’s a great theme for Halloween parties, college parties and just because zombies are cool. Just ask Woody Harrelson from the blockbuster hit movie Zombieland.

We hope these tips are useful. If you have any great zombie tips or facts, please share them with us.

Costume of the Week: Reversible Costumes

October 5, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke

For kids, it’s all about trick or treating but for teens and young adults Halloween is about parties. Often, they are invited to more than one and purchase a different costume for each party. These days, everyone is more budget conscious so why not double the bang for your buck and purchase a reversible costume?

 5

According to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation, Halloween spending is expected to be down 15% from last year. That equates to less people buying Halloween costumes. To meet the challenge of this decline in spending, retailers like CostumeSuperCenter.com are focusing on Halloween costume discounts and values. Reversible costumes definitely have added value.

Take a look at these hot looks:

  1. The Buggin Out Adult Costume - an adorable costume that is a ladybug on one side and a bumble bee on the other. Wear it with thigh high stocking and heels or black tights and boots to vary the look even more.
  2. Sex Crimes and Miss Demeanors Costume - You can be a sexy cop one night and a prisoner of love the next. The costume comes with a reversible dress with removeable straps, belt, handcuffs, police cap, prisoner hat, baton and choker.
  3. Women’s Sexy Drive Me Crazy Costume - If you have the need for speed, our Drive Me Crazy Costume is ideal for you. It includes a reversible race car/taxi cab driver dress with removable, adjustable shoulder straps and separate shrug, headband, taxi driver hat and belt.
  4. Miss Hellen Back Costume - a Heavenly angel on one side and a devilish vixen on the other. The costume features a fully reversible Devil/Angel stretch knit dress. Also included are two pair of gloves, devil horns headband, removable devil tail, Miss Hellen Back removable name badge, halo headband, angel wings and a wand.

So, if you have two parties to go to consider the opting for two complete looks in one by purchasing a reversible costume.

Costume of the Week: Toddler Spiderman

September 21, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke
Spiderman Toddler Muscle Costume

Spiderman Toddler Muscle Costume

For the past two weeks the Toddler Spider-Man Muscle costume has been the best selling Halloween Costume item at CostumeSuperCenter.

Spiderman is one of the most popular of all the Marvel comic book superheroes. The commercial success of Spiderman in film, toys and merchandising has made Spiderman a top rated toy for young boys and a most recognized and adored hero.

When it comes to looking for a superhero to emulate who better than Spiderman? He attained his powers as a teen and had to learn how to use them with trial and error. In the process he learned that “with great power comes great responsibility.” The character makes little boys feel powerful, grown-up, brave and invincible. As far as boys costumes go, its pretty hard to beat

The Toddler Spiderman Muscle Chest costume features the bodysuit with a padded chest and arms to look like bulging muscles and the mask. The boots and gloves are sold separately at www.costumediscounters.com.

Scooby Doo: Ageless Appeal at Halloween

September 8, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke

 scooby

On September 13 Scooby Doo will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its TV debut. Since its debut in 1969 the cartoon series has been reincarnated many times in animated form and twice for live film. It’s eleventh incarnation called Scooby-Doo - Mystery, Inc. is scheduled to debut this fall on the Cartoon Network.

Scooby Doo is an ageless, timeless cartoon. Scooby Doo, Shaggy, Freddy, Daphne and Velma have been entertaining generations of kids. They cruise around in their van solving mysteries that usually debunk ghost stories and end with catching bad guys, and most of the time making Scooby the accidental hero. And everybody loves to do their own Scooby impression. “Rooby Roo, Rhere are Roo”?

My girlfriend Joann, remembers the year Scooby Doo aired. She was 10 years old. Today, she is the grandmother of a two year old boy. Not only is he a third generation Scooby Doo fan but he is wearing a Scooby Doo Costume this Halloween that she purchased from Costume SuperCenter.  And thanks to DVD’s her grandson gets to spend time with grammy watching the same episodes her and his mother grew up on.

Costume SuperCenter carries the Scooby Doo kids Halloween costumes but also features them in adult Halloween costumes.

Even my own daughter dressed as Scooby Doo when she was 3. We watched that Miner 49er episode until we had it memorized ver batem.

Year after year it is a bestselling Halloween Costume.

From Barney to Disney, Selena Gomez Works Her Magic

September 1, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke

9188rselenagomez1Selena Gomez is an up and coming big star. At the ripe old age of 17 she has appeared on TV shows, movies and stars as Alex Russo in the hit Disney Channel series, Wizards of Waverly Place. She has recenty finshed recording her debut album set to drop in September. If that’s not enough she is also involved in many philanthropic organizations including Disney’s Friends for Change which promotes environmental awareness with her friends Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. And to think, it all started with Barney

When Selena was 7 years old she got a role on the children’s show Barney. It was there that she met her best friend and future Disney Channel star, Demi Lovato.  She was discovered by the Disney Channel in 2004 and has appeared on Suite Life of Zach and Cody and Hannah Montana before landing the role of Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place in 2007.

Alex Russo is the middle child of 3 kids, all who possess wizard powers thanks to their dad, a former wizard. Their father, Jerry had to give up his magic powers to marry Alex’s  mother who is a mortal. On this show, wizards and mortals cannot marry. Alex is known for her fashion sense and for using magic unsupervised witch usually gets her into trouble.

Costume SuperCenter has officially Disney licensed Alex Russo Halloween costumes, new for 2009!

Costume of the Week: Clubhouse Minnie Mouse

August 31, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke

di50105clubhouseminnieI love all things Disney. As a Disney Vacation Club Member, I have had the pleasure of visiting Walt Disney World 8 times since 2002.  One thing I never get tired of seeing at the parks are little girls dressed in their princess costumes. But not often enough do you see little girls dressed as the Disney’s female mascot, Minnie Mouse. Therefore, the costume of the week is the Clubhouse Minnie Mouse costume.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the princeses but I will save them for another blog.  This blog is devoted the adorable and timeless Minnie Mouse.

The Clubhouse Minnie Mouse costume is new for 2009 at CostumeSuperCenter.com.  It features a pink polka dot dress with a cameo of Minnie, and a matching headband with Minnie ears and a pink polka dot bow. This adorable dress resembles the one that Minnie wears on the animated Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on the Disney Channel.  It’s a cuter, younger version of Minnie’s tradition red and white polka dot dress and is geared toward toddlers and very young children.

This particular incarnation of Minnie Mouse is a sweet girl who interacts with a cast of Disney regulars as they teach very young viewers basic educational skills such as counting, identifying shapes, movement, speech and critical thinking.  All of their teaching is done in a very identifiably ”Disney” way.  Right from the start of the show when you must shout out the clubhouse password “Meeska Mooska, Mickey Mouse” it’s easy to see how small children find these Disney characters so captivating.  This show is interactive and full of music and catchy dialogue.  Best of all, it makes learning fun. Their personalities are so child friendly and Minnie’s sweet and gentle demeanor epitomizes femininity.

We highly recommend the Clubhouse Minnie Mouse costume not only for Halloween but for dress-up too. It will be your little girl’s favorite addition to her toy box. Imagine how cute she’ll look dressed as Minnie as she watches her favorite Disney show. And what bette role model for a sweet young lady like yours?
