Record Set for the Most People In Leprechaun Costumes

On March 17, 2011, 224 people broke the Guinness Book of World Record for the largest assembly of people dressed in Leprechaun costumes, nearly half of which were supplied by Costume SuperCenter. It was organized by The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

The leprechaun category is new at Guinness so instead of breaking a record they had to set one by fulfilling a specific set of criteria. They said that there must be a minimum of 200 leprechauns and that every costume must consist of a green coat, green or black trousers, a beard, top hat, and appropriate footwear. The participants arrived at the studio in the morning, where wardrobe gave them their costumes and make up artists applied their fake beards, ears and some even had their hair sprayed red.  They were counted one-by-one as they entered the green room, and had to remain together in this location for 10 minutes in order for the record to be official. The countdown and World Record presentation was featured on the show. By the way, how appropriate was it that this took place in the “green room?”

What a great way to spend a St. Patrick’s Day. It was great to see so many happy Leprechauns, dressed in our costumes. We were glad to be a part of this new world record. Everybody looked like they had fun and our Leprechaun costumes looked amazing. I hope that there was a good Irish Pub near Jay Leno’s Tonight Show studio for all those Leprechauns to celebrate after the show.

A Note On 80’s Costumes, Dance Clubs & Being the Real Deal

March 1, 2011 in Costume Adventures by Lara Burke

Get your 80’s costumes and head to NYC for a night to remember. Last Saturday night I had the opportunity meet up with old friends and go to Canal Room, a trendy club in New York City, owned by an old college friend of ours.  Every Saturday night, the bar has a Back to the 80’s theme and we were lucky enough to experience it. When you walk in, there are images of Billy Idol, Cindy Lauper and Boy George on the walls and the music is an eclectic mix of 80s top 40 and dance music.  Two bands played, a phenomenal Guns and Roses tribute band and an 80s cover band called Rubix Kube that is the most versatile and talented act around. They shook the house.

Here is a taste of what you will see if you go. It is hard to believe it’s all the same band:

Since every one of my teenage years was spent in the 80s I could totally relate to the atmosphere. In fact, many people there were dressed in 80s costumes. Between the music and the costumes, the night was one crazy flashback.  My friends Adrienne, Dominick and I were dancing when two women in their very early 20s started dancing with us. One of the women leaned into Adrienne and said, “We love the 80’s. We wish we were growing up back then. It’s so cool that you guys are the real deal.”  They were dancing with us as if we were celebrities. We got a real kick out of that comment and said thank you, all the time hoping that it was an expression of envy and not them saying, “Wow, you’re awfully old to be here. Shouldn’t you be home in bed at this hour?” Well here’s a news flash, real deal kids of the 80s rock the house FOREVER!!

We are planning to go back soon and this time, Miss Real Deal here is going to wear an 80’s costume that will show the twenty-somethings how its done. Unfortunately for me, the 80s were as many pounds ago as they were years ago so I won’t be raiding the attic for old clothes. That’s why I’m so glad that I can get authentic 80’s costumes and accessories from Costume SuperCenter that look, fit and feel like they belong on the Canal Room dance floor.

If Halloween is Over, Why do You Need More Costumes?

November 5, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Lara Burke

 untitled-1

Oh, where do I begin?  Halloween is over and the candy is mostly eaten but that’s no reason to put the costumes away or to stop buying more.

Here are some great reasons to continue to shop for costumes:

  • Take advantage of big price reductions and buy your costume for next year now when you can get it for a really low price.

  • Add your kids’ costumes to their toy chest so they can play dress up and pretend. Purchase a few more at after season prices. Children really love to create adventures with costumes. Princesses, superheroes and firemen are some favorites.

  • Spice things up behind closed doors. The weather is getting colder and costumes are a great way to heat things up in the bedroom.  There are many sexy role play costumes that will turn any day into a special occasion. A sexy French Maid, nurse or harem girl never gets old. Even something as simple as a sexy wig can add some excitement to your love life.

  •  School plays and Thanksgiving pagents are coming up. There is a large assortment of pilgram and indian costumes that parents and teachers can use to add life and excitement to a history lesson.

  • Get a jump on Christmas. Santa, elf and sexy Christmas costumes are on sale now. It’s not too early to think about Christmas, just look at your local supermarkets and department stores. The isles are already lined with Christmas trimmings.

Costumes are fun for young and old all year long. No matter what the holiday, occasion, or event, you will be able to find and wear the perfect costume.

At Halloween Big Candy Rules – Fun Size Blows

September 30, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Lara Burke

Want to know how our house became the most popular house on the block every Halloween? Big candy! Not the little fun size but the real deal; the big Kahunas.

I grew up in a rural town. There were only two houses on my block. Needless to say, we never got any trick or treaters. So 10 years ago when my parents sold that house and moved into a huge subdivision loaded with kids Halloween finally became an official holiday. In their excitement, they decided to buy full sized candy bars. Dozens of Snickers, Hershey Bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Twix Bars filled a bowl as big as the eyes of all the children who caught a glimpse of their jumbo treat.

 candy

My parents were overjoyed by the smiling facing and shouts of “that house has big candy!” and “Come-on! Hurry!” that they didn’t realize what they had gotten themselves into. The following year, neighbors commented how their kids were looking forward to coming back for some more big candy. The years that followed were filled with scenarios such as kids rushing the door like a stampede, modifying their costumes and trying to come back for seconds, and parents of trick or treaters telling my mom that they came from the other development because their kids heard at school about the house that gave out full size candy bars.  I’m not kidding – from other developments! You’d think they were the only house on the planet that had big candy and that kids all over town only had this one chance every year to eat a big candy bar. Crazy!

Last year, mom moved to a retirement community and I moved into her house with my family. Since my mother is big on tradition and deep down just loves being known as the “house with the big candy”, we promised to keep the tradition of the big bars alive. And since I work for a company that specializes in Halloween costumes and accessories, I’ve got a few additional tricks up my sleeve. Maybe some spooky music and fake fog; perhaps a yard full of graves and ghouls. Come get the big candy now if you dare!

To give you a sense of what a big deal the big bars are, last year we bought 15 boxes of 12  (180 bars) and had to shut the lights and lock the door by 8pm because we ran out of candy. And that was in just 3 hours! Because Halloween falls on a Saturday this year we are estimating about 300 bars, crazy, right? But nevertheless, I like being the house with the big candy and this year will be better than ever thanks to all the Halloween props and decorations I’m buying from Costume SuperCenter.

Mommy and Me Halloween Costumes

September 15, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Lara Burke

wwThis Halloween, how about making the trick or treating experience even more special by dressing up with your daughter. Whether you’re handing out candy or accompanying your daughter door to door, your added participation send the message to your daughter that you share her enthusiasm. There are so many adult costumes that match with kids costumes the combinations are innumerable.

Little girls idolize their moms and love to do things with them.   Now that my daughter is a preteen, we look back on our special mother/daughter memories such as having tea parties with her and her stuffed animals, having spa days when I would polish her nails and she would polish my nails (and fingers and portions of the towel I rested my hands on).  I would always dress up with her in her dress up clothes but we never had the chance to dress in costume together.  Not she’s too mature for dressing up.  If I could go back and do it again, here are some of the mother/daughter Halloween costumes I would pick:

I’m a fanatic for taking pictures. I wish I had some of those pictures to add to our family album. Kids grow so fast and you can’t get the time back. Even if you feel silly dressing up in matching costumes, its no more silly than dad feels while playing Barbie with his little girl. Your child will love it and you will be so happy you did it. Remember, it’s all about them.

Costume of the Week: Who’s Buying Banana Suits?

September 14, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Lara Burke

I overheard earlier today that a customer enquired about purchasing $6000 worth of Banana Costumes because he’s organizing a big company-wide promotion. This got me wondering what type of company it was and why a banana. Are they going bananas over new low prices? Are they a smoothie shop advertising the fresh fruit in their drinks or maybe an ice cream parlor having a run on banana splits?  And who has to draw the small straw to wear the costume. I can just picture somebody, feeling pretty silly, but nevertheless happy to be employed, standing on a street corner in a banana costume holding up a sign. What the sign says is just as intriguing as the choice of costume.

I have seen gorillas selling furniture, cows selling chicken and chickens selling mattresses but I have yet to see a banana with something to sell.

To do the math, a deluxe banana costume is currently on sale for $29.97. That means that somewhere in the United States there are soon to be 200 banana people out on the streets. So, if you happen to see a guy in a banana suit, let me know.

pirateCostumes are fun all year long. They are not just for Halloween.  In addition to major costume holidays like Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Fourth of July and Thanksgiving there are many offbeat, unofficial holidays that are great for wearing costumes.

If ever you need an excuse to get a bunch of friends together to dress up in costumes, these offbeat holidays are it. Who could deny what fun it would be to celebrate Cinco de Mayo dressed in Mexican serapes and sombreros? How about September 19th which is Talk Like a Pirate Day? Imagine your friends using pirate lingo, dressed like pirates and drinking some run punch. Fun, huh?

  • March 2 – Dr. Suess’ Birthday - Dr. Suess’ Birthday is widely celebrated in elementary schools across America. This is a great opportunity for teacher and students alike to don their Cat in the Hat red and white striped top hats and remember this beloved children’s author.
