Hannah Montana is a Hot Teen Rage

May 13, 2009 in Celebrity Costumes by Ren Faire Reese

As a teenager I had so many idols that I can’t remember them all. Some of my poster icons made such an indelible impression on my young mind that I will never forget them. Today, I think the word for a teen idol is the same but it’s not called a “fad” any more. Now it’s a “rage” and the television, magazines and internet are flooded with them.

Help Solve this Sherlock Holmes Style Whodunit Mystery – Part One

It’s late on a Saturday night and I’m still at home alone mailing all the fancy invitations that I ordered special for the Whodunit theme party I’m hosting in two weeks. Samantha promised to help with all the decorations and props so the house would be set up for this live mystery action. Samantha is one of my best friends and she knows how important it is to me that every detail in an occasion this special be covered. I mean, what is a Sherlock Holmes mystery if it’s not set in London?

If you’ve ever visited London, then you know that it’s foggy. Naturally, this whodunit re-enactment would need fog. “How would you create fog? I wondered. (more…)

Have you ever heard the song “Walk like an Egyptian”? There is a moral to that song that will spare you undue embarrassment so read on as you pack your suitcase. Put on your Easter Bonnet for the Easter Parade

Make sure there are bows and frills upon it, so your Easter bonnet will fit into the tradition. As long as I can remember, people have been dressing up for Easter Sunday. This special day holds traditions such as attending church on Sunday dressed in your finest attire. In my youth, after church the parade was the festivity of the season. A feast followed the parade with lots of relatives coming to visit. I can still smell all that good food and the smells of the fancy new clothes we bought just for the occasion.

Of course, children might have a difference of opinion here. In their minds, I’m sure the Easter bunny and baskets filled with fruits and candies is far more important on their list of special Easter events. For those lucky enough to have gone on an Easter egg hunt, it would be tough to choose between the two.

Ample Figures Made History Then and Now

April 3, 2009 in Costume Trends by Ren Faire Reese

Aren’t they a beautiful looking couple? Many of my renaissance and pirate friends are people of great stature and form like this handsome duo. They are fortunate because fashion has evolved to consider people above the size 10 figure. I love the way they present their beauty in plus size.

If we stayed with the thin to skinny trend of the 70’s with Twiggy as our model to admire, I’d still be in trouble. I was no Twiggy look- a -like then and I’m certainly not in competition with her now. Now I did admire Twiggy, so much that I had my hair styled and cut like hers. For style, her hair -do was hot. As for Twiggy’s clothes, I’d never know because one stitch would not have fit me even in my early years. Her mini skirt would be my ankle cover!

Mermaids Emerge from the Land of Celtic Folklore

April 2, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Ren Faire Reese

What prize awaits the fisherman who casts his net into the sea? He casts his rod or net expecting to reel in the big one for dinner, a fish that is. The last thing on his mind is catching a mermaid, unless you’re a fisherman who lived along the coasts of Norway or Iceland or Ireland.

This analogy did not hold true for the ancient Celts and Scottish folk who often told stories of these lovely mythical creatures. Since my ancestors were Celtic and Nordic, I sought out the stories passed down from my ancestors. I’m fascinated by the thought of half human and half fish creatures. I listened to adults in my family talk about them as if they were real . How could I dismiss the possibility?

Sasquatch Sighted at Oval Office Ball

March 19, 2009 in Celebrity Costumes by Ren Faire Reese

The limousine pulled up in front of the White House and the Secret Service greeted me as they opened the doors for me and the other two invited guests. We held the honor and distinction of being the first press personnel to be invited to the Oval Office Ball without being on a news assignment. This was a first for me. Can you feel my excitement as I try not to perspire on that beautiful dancing gown that I bought just for this occasion?

My gown is gorgeous, chic, and shiny jet black. The front and back are cut in a V with lace inserts for a little added elegance and to preserve the mystery. The shoes I’m wearing really complement the gown but they are soft like slippers and low to the floor, so I won’t be. I’m not the most graceful person in heels and forget about dancing in them!

Costumes that are Made for More than Clowning Around

March 18, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Ren Faire Reese

Clowns represent the universal language of laughter. Their costumes say it all.

I remember the days of going to the circus. Every year when Barnum & Bailey came to town, my parents took us to the Jaffa Mosque to see this great circus performance. As I recall, the clowns were always the center of attention. They were the opening act, the intermission, and the closing act.

I remember how we climbed the bleacher seats up to the balcony level so we could get a good view of the trapeze act. My little eyes stared in amazement at the fancy dressed men and women who hung from the ropes and swings while they challenged gravity.
