Halloween Costumes Have Come a Long Way

May 27, 2010 in General Costumes by Lara Burke
Halloween Costumes have come a long way since we were kids. If you’re around my age you distinctly remember going to the local 5 and Dime or drug store and picking your Halloween costume from an assortment of boxed sets. Each contained an awful vinyl or nylon smock/jumpsuit and a sweaty plastic mask with a rubber band back.

The funny thing is that my friends and I preferred these cheap excuses for Halloween costumes over the homemade costumes that were worn by other kids on the block. I for one preferred the store bought Halloween costume because anything would have looked better than what my mother could make; not a crafty lady by any means. So every year it was the same story. I couldn’t see or breathe in the mask and the rubber band broke before I reached the 3rd house.  No wonder my brother took the easy way out and alternated each year between his Little League uniform and his Pop Warner uniform.

Patriotic Costumes are Symbols of our Freedom

May 24, 2010 in Historical Costumes by Lara Burke

It’s time to write my costume blog. As I sit here with my family on a rainy Sunday afternoon watching a DVD of The Patriot, I cannot help but choose patriotic costumes as my subject.

The Patriot is about the Revolutionary war.  The patriots were forming troops of Continental Army and militia to fight the British Redcoats for political freedom.

With regard to this movie, patriotic costume would encompass US and British military costumes for boys and men but with regard to patriotic costumes in general there are some many from which to choose. For this particular period in history I really like the Ben Franklin costume and George Washington costume. As our founding fathers the helped shape the nation as we know it today. The efforts and sacrifices of those brave men did not go in vain.

With Memorial Day a week away and Fourth of July right around the corner you will be seeing more Patriotic Costumes at public events, be it parades, fairs or other celebrations.  This includes costumes such as Uncle Sam costumes, Betsy Ross Costumes and of course, the Statue of Liberty Costume.

It all comes back to the events depicted in this great movie. As a country, we continue to fight for our freedom. That gives these costumes even more importance.

As I always say, costumes are not just for Halloween. Many have true significance, symbolize our beliefs, and pay tribute to important figures in history. Patriotic costumes from Costume SuperCenter are quality costumes with authentic detailing. Wearing a patriotic costume will send you back in time and remind you how great it is to be an American.

Will Ferrell Costume Rule!

May 19, 2010 in Celebrity Costumes by Lara Burke

Will Ferrell Costumes RULE!

I don’t know about you but I love Will Ferrell movies. I’ve seen them all.  We could debate all day about which is the best but one thing is for sure, I could watch them over and over and never get tired of them. Actually, they get better with repeated viewing. Maybe it’s the familiarity; maybe it’s that you tend to notice something funny in the background that you didn’t catch before. Regardless, Will Ferrell movies rule and the costumes from his movies make the best Halloween costumes.

Will Ferrell costumes rule! We’re talking Ron Burgundy Anchorman costumes, Talladega Nights Ricky Bobbie costumes, Jackie Moon Semi-Pro costumes, The SNL Spartan Cheerleader costume and the Elf Costume.

My husband just made a funny remark about Will Ferrell. He said if you really want a good Will Ferrell Costume you should just go to a party in your underpants because it seems that he loves to go bare at one point or another in all of his movies ie – running on the race track in his underpants in Talladega Nights or running down in street streaking in Old School just to name two.

OK, Will Ferrell’s underpants are definitely funny but Will Ferrell Halloween costumes are funny too and they can actually be worn in public.  I think he is so funny I even put a poll on the Costume SuperCenter Facebook page.

Make Costume SuperCenter your spot to buy Ron Burgundy Costumes (coming soon) and other Will Ferrell costumes and be the life of the party.

Rock the Heavens Ronnie James Dio!

May 17, 2010 in Uncategorized by Lara Burke

Ronnie James Dio, rock god has died at 67. Dio, the man who fronted Rainbow as well as Black Sabbath after Ozzy’s departure and later, his own band, Dio, lost his battle to stomach cancer yesterday. As one of the most respected gentlemen of heavy metal, he will be sorely missed.

For you youngsters out there who don’t remember Dio’s music you will certainly recognize his legacy at every concert you attend – the devil horn hand gesture. Dio has often told the story of his old Italian grandmother using this hand gesture as a superstitious way to ward off the evil eye. He started using it during concerts and before you knew it the hand gesture became synonymous with heavy metal rock n roll.”

Dio was an innovator. His style was displayed more in lyric than in heavy metal costumes. He sang about fantasy and myth; demons, and the struggle between heaven and hell. You never heard him sing about partying all night or pretty girls. He wasn’t one for glam and makeup although he did love the theatrics of heavy metal.

Holy Diver was one of my first heavy metal albums and something completely forbidden for a Catholic school 8th grade girl. I knew who Ronnie James Dio was because my older brother had a Black Sabbath record. I loved his music and lyrics but unfortunately my young teen hormones made me much more interested in cute rockers with tight pants than metal gods with deep messages.

I seen him in many interviews and have heard all of his songs and what I’ve experienced, I liked.  Dio seemed a warm and intelligent person with a deep love of music and people. My heart goes out to his family. Rock the Heavens Ronnie!

Costume SuperCenter Pays Tribute to the Last Ziegfeld Girl

May 12, 2010 in General Costumes by Lara Burke

Today we devote our blog to Doris Eaton Travis, the last surviving Ziegfeld Girl who passed away yesterday at the age of 106. She was part of dance history having been part of the most famous US dance show in the 20s. These dancers were the sex symbols of the time, dancing big show numbers in beautiful dance costumes

Doris Eaton Travis was the youngest dancer in the Ziegfeld Follies, starting her career there in 1917 at the age of 14. The Follies was a big production with music, dancing and comedy – a cross between Broadway and Vaudeville. The Dancers wore elaborate and sexy dance costumes, some very revealing. Doris danced in the Follies until the early 20’s and even made a few silent movies.

Her career began to decline in the 30s so she became an instructor at an Arthur Murray school, eventually opening 18 of her own Arthur Murray Dance Studios. Dance was a lifelong passion she held until her passing yesterday.

Dance costumes were a big part of the Follies. They were often designed by the famous designers of the time such as Erte and Lady Duff Gordon. 20’s costumes and costumes that have a Cabaret, Flapper or Burlesque style were popular at the Ziegfeld Follies. They also loved showgirl costumes with sheer fabrics, sparkles and lots of feathers.

With Doris Eaton Travis’ death we say good bye to an era. At least those days can live on in spirit and costume.

Disney’s Jason Dolley Loved to Play Dress up – Here’s How

May 7, 2010 in Uncategorized by Lara Burke

More proof that costumes are not just for Halloween. Actor and star of the new Disney family sitcom, Good Luck Charlie, admits on the Bonnie Hunt Show that as a child he loved to play dress up with costumes. That great use of imagination and cosplay probably had something to do with his success as an actor. Prior to this new sitcom which debuted in April on the Disney Channel, Jason Dolley has already starred in two Disney movies and a Disney sitcom.

Dolley told Bonny Hunt about his dress-up days. “I was big into playing dress-up. The day after Halloween, the stores would have big sales so my mom would go and buy new costumes. Me and one of my brothers, during the year, would just put the costumes on and become that character.”

Like we have mentioned in previous blogs, dressing up is a great way for kids to play. It is appropriate for boys and girls. They can explore different personas, occupations and characters. With costumes and accessories, the play possibilities are endless. A simple feather boa can turn a child into an actress, a socialite or a showgirl; a toy sword can turn a boy into a knight, a pirate or a gladiator. Just by using their imagination, a girl in a princess costume can create her own magical kingdom and a boy in a firefighter costume can rescue frightened people from a burning building.

At Costume Supercenter, costumes are at low prices all year round. You can also take advantage of clearance costume for even greater savings.

A New Breed of Superhero Costumes Will be Kick Ass

May 3, 2010 in General Costumes by Lara Burke

That’s right! There is a new breed of superheroes. And as the tagline says, They can’t read your mind but they can kick you ass!” The Kick Ass costumes kick ass too. They are something new and way trendier than your typical Superman costume.

Kick Ass, introduces us to a new breed of superheroes. They don’t have actual super powers but defend those in need, nevertheless. Hardly a parody of the superhero genre, Kick Ass is a bona fide super hero movie. Although it has its funny moments, it is a serious and violet action-adventure film.

Dave, the main character is an unpopular high school kid and a comic book fanatic. He wonders why there are no everyday superheroes so he decides to give it a shot. He becomes the superhero Kick Ass; his costume, a green wetsuit.

His first attempt at a superhero rescue landed him in the hospital with multiples steel rods to hold together his broken bones and permanent nerve damage. Ironically, this has made him stronger and more impervious to pain. Thanks to some witnesses with i-phones he becomes a viral superhero phenomenon.

Kick Ass soon finds himself caught up in a mob related incident brought on by father-daughter vigilantes – the highly trained and skilled Big Daddy and Hit Girl – and has no choice but to see it through.

The costumes for Kick Ass are in production and will be available for Halloween 2010. Costume SuperCenter will have Kick Ass costumes, Hit Girl costumes, Big Daddy costumes and Red Mist Costumes. Stayed tuned to our blog for more details coming soon.
