Have a Hot Tub Time Machine Halloween with 80s Costumes

March 31, 2010 in General Costumes by Lara Burke

Go back in time and do it all over again! Replace your iPod with a boom box, break out the neon and don’t forget the big hair. Go crazy with retro 80s costumes just like they did in the movie Hot Tub Time Machine. Wouldn’t it be fun to wear 80s Halloween costumes this year with all of your friends and tell everyone you’re from Hot Tub Time Machine? The answer is YES.

In the movie, Hot Tub Time Machine four friends are sent back in time to the 1980s. The friends, down on their luck, decide to spend a weekend at a ski resort they frequented in their heyday, in particular Winterfest ‘86.  After having too much to drink in a hot tub, they awake to find they have been transported back to the very time they long to relive. They realize this is the opportunity for the ultimate do-over. Hot Tub Time Machine stands out, not only for its very raunchy humor but also for the ultimate 80’s costume flashbacks.

The costumes in this movie are exactly what we think of when we picture 80’s costumes. The colors, the hair, and the shoulder pads – it all comes crashing back.  The costume designer hit the nail on the head with these costumes and so does Costume SuperCenter. The women’s 80’s costumes feature neon, mesh, lace, brightly colored animal prints and big shoulder pads. Men’s 80’s costumes are big on heavy metal rocker costumes, MC Hammer pants, mullets and Michael Jackson styles.

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, you should and when it comes to deciding on a Halloween costume choose 80s costumes all the way!

The 2010 Brady Bunch Costumes Make Retro Groovy

March 24, 2010 in Uncategorized by Lara Burke

The new costume line for 2010 is rolling in with plenty of time for Halloween. Some of our favorites are based on TV classics like the Brady Bunch.

The Brady Bunch was America’s perfect modern family where step siblings loved each other and everyone loved each other and 8 people coexisted with relative peace in a 3 bedroom house. Carol and Mike Brady kept the Brady house running smoothly thanks to the assistance of their live-in housekeeper, Alice.

The Brady kids lived together and sang together. Our new Brady Bunch costumes are based on two distinct styles: their regular crazy 70s clothes that we love to make fun of when we watch the reruns and their occasional wacky matching musical group costumes.

Those Brady kids were known to rock out in a way you’d only find in the 70s.

The everyday wardrobe styles that make up the Brady Bunch costumes for the boys, Greg, Peter and Bobby, have bold stripes and color combinations while the Brady Bunch costumes for the girls, Marcia, Jan and Cindy featured All American Mod Girl styles that were so popular at the time.

The other Brady Bunch costumes are replicas of the costumes worn in one of those musical numbers – the fringed jumpsuits from the Brady Movie when the kids sing “Keep On” for the talent competition.

Brady costumes are retro fun all by themselves but you can make them even more by wearing them with your friends or siblings as a group costume. A 70’s style wig will also add to the style of your Brady Bunch costume.

Rounding out the Brady Bunch costumes are the costumes for Mike Brady, Carol Brady and Alice the housekeeper. Costume SuperCenter has them all and they’ll be ready for sale in plenty of time for Halloween.

Where do our St. Patrick’s Day Traditions Come From?

March 17, 2010 in Holiday Costumes by Lara Burke

Its 10AM on St. Patrick’s Day which means the pubs are officially open for business. Today, there will be standing room only crowds creating a sea of green from the entrance of the exit of every Irish pub.

Imbibing patrons adorned with St. Patty’s Day costumes and assorted green accoutrements will sing Irish songs and give legendary Irish toasts to their friends while indulging in all-you-can-eat corned beef and cabbage. But what is the origin of these Irish traditions?

You may be wondering why we wear green on St. Patrick’s Day.  That one is easy. Ireland is known world-wide at the Emerald Isle, Leprechauns are green, green is a color in the Irish Flag and shamrock are green. Anyone could have figured that one out.

Corned beef and cabbage is a different story. At my favorite Irish Pub, their Reuben is legendary. Go figure, corned beef, sauerkraut and rye bread is an Irish sandwich. Well actually, the true traditional Irish dish is Irish bacon with cabbage and potatoes. Corned beef is a US tradition that started when the Irish immigrants could not find, or afford Irish bacon. They substituted corned beef because it was inexpensive and easy to find at the tenement butcher shops of their Jewish immigrant neighbors. The Irish made the Rueben their own with the very un-kosher addition of melted Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. Gee, is there anything Irish in a Rueben?

Lastly, and this one is new to me, is that you can pinch someone for not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day. I’m surprised that I’m just learning of this now because it has been around since the 1700’s. Legend has it that wearing green makes you invisible to Leprechauns. If a Leprechaun sees you he will give you a pinch. So people will pinch someone who doesn’t wear green to remind them to beware of the little Leprechauns.

There you have it. Three Irish traditions explained. If you want a good seat, you’d better get to the pub early and have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Irish Toast Part III from Costume SuperCenter

March 15, 2010 in Holiday Costumes by Lara Burke

This is Part 3 of our list of Irish toasts and blessings. If you don’t have enough toasts by now to keep you in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit then you should seriously consider rehab.

Morning is the time to pity the sober. The way they’re feeling then is the best they’re going to feel all day.

Thirst is a shameless disease so here’s to a shameful cure.

An Irish youth proves his manhood by getting stuck in a pint, in a woman, and in a fish-in that order.

Daylight comes through the drunkard’s roof the fastest.

A man takes a drink; the drink takes a drink; the drink takes the man.

Before you call for one for the road be sure you know the road.

May your feet never sweat,
your neighbor give you ne’re a treat.
When flowers bloom, I hope you’ll not sneeze,
and may you always have someone to squeeze!

For each petal on the shamrock.
This brings a wish your way
Good health, good luck, and happiness
For today and every day.

May you live a long life
Full of gladness and health,
With a pocket full of gold
As the least of you wealth.
May the dreams you hold dearest,
Be those which come true,
The kindness you spread,
Keep returning to you.

Here’s to me, and here’s to you,
And here’s to love and laughter-
I’ll be true as long as you,
And not one moment after.

May the luck of the Irish smile upon you this St. Patrick’s Day. Costume SuperCenter hopes you catch your Leprechaun and find your pot of gold.

More Irish Toasts from Costume SuperCenter

March 10, 2010 in Holiday Costumes by Lara Burke

Here’s another round of Irish toasts to help you celebrate your St. Patrick’s Day. Don’t forget to wear green and hold your pint up high.

Here’s to a long life and a merry one.
A quick death and an easy one.
A pretty girl and an honest one.
A cold pint– and another one!

Here’s to being single…
Drinking doubles…
And seeing triple!

Here’s to health, peace and prosperity. May the flower of love never be nipped by the frost of disappointment, nor shadow of grief fall among your family and friends.

May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies and quick to make friends. And may you know nothing but happiness from this day forward.

May God grant you many years to live, for sure he must be knowing, the earth has angels all too few and heaven is overflowing…

May misfortune follow you the rest of your life, and never catch up.

If you’re enough lucky to be Irish…
You’re lucky enough!

May you live to be 100 years, with one extra year to repent.

May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.

May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been,
The foresight to know where you are going,
And the insight to know when you have gone too far.

You’ve got some more toasts so now you need something fun to wear.  You can go all out and wear a St. Patrick’s Day costume to show off your Irish pride or something as fun and simple as a button. My favorite button reads, “Irish Whisky Makes Me Frisky.”  Have a Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Irish Toasts for St. Patrick’s Day from Costume SuperCenter

March 4, 2010 in Holiday Costumes by Lara Burke

With St. Patrick’s Day coming soon, here are some Irish toasts, sayings and blessing to help you celebrate, courtesy of Costume SuperCenter. We wish you a Happy, fun-filled St. Patrick’s Day.

May you be in Heaven a half hour
Before the devil knows your dead.

I complained I had no shoes
Until I met a man who had no feet.

May your heart be warm and happy
With the lilt of Irish laughter,
Every day in every way
And forever and ever after.

May your neighbors accept you,
Trouble neglect you,
Angels protect you and
Heaven accept you.

May the Leprechauns be near you
To spread luck your way,
And may all the Irish angels
Smile upon you this St. Patrick’s Day.

May the roof above us never fall in
And may friends gathered below it never fall out.

Dance as if no one is watching,
Sing as if no one is listening
And live every day as if it were your last.

A family of Irish birth will argue and fight
But let a shout come from without and see them all unite.

Raise a mug of Irish cheer, put on a lucky Irish charm but for extra luck, go for the pot of gold by wearing an Irish St. Patrick’s Day costume from Costume SuperCenter.
