At Halloween Big Candy Rules – Fun Size Blows

September 30, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Lara Burke

Want to know how our house became the most popular house on the block every Halloween? Big candy! Not the little fun size but the real deal; the big Kahunas.

I grew up in a rural town. There were only two houses on my block. Needless to say, we never got any trick or treaters. So 10 years ago when my parents sold that house and moved into a huge subdivision loaded with kids Halloween finally became an official holiday. In their excitement, they decided to buy full sized candy bars. Dozens of Snickers, Hershey Bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Twix Bars filled a bowl as big as the eyes of all the children who caught a glimpse of their jumbo treat.

 candy

My parents were overjoyed by the smiling facing and shouts of “that house has big candy!” and “Come-on! Hurry!” that they didn’t realize what they had gotten themselves into. The following year, neighbors commented how their kids were looking forward to coming back for some more big candy. The years that followed were filled with scenarios such as kids rushing the door like a stampede, modifying their costumes and trying to come back for seconds, and parents of trick or treaters telling my mom that they came from the other development because their kids heard at school about the house that gave out full size candy bars.  I’m not kidding – from other developments! You’d think they were the only house on the planet that had big candy and that kids all over town only had this one chance every year to eat a big candy bar. Crazy!

Last year, mom moved to a retirement community and I moved into her house with my family. Since my mother is big on tradition and deep down just loves being known as the “house with the big candy”, we promised to keep the tradition of the big bars alive. And since I work for a company that specializes in Halloween costumes and accessories, I’ve got a few additional tricks up my sleeve. Maybe some spooky music and fake fog; perhaps a yard full of graves and ghouls. Come get the big candy now if you dare!

To give you a sense of what a big deal the big bars are, last year we bought 15 boxes of 12  (180 bars) and had to shut the lights and lock the door by 8pm because we ran out of candy. And that was in just 3 hours! Because Halloween falls on a Saturday this year we are estimating about 300 bars, crazy, right? But nevertheless, I like being the house with the big candy and this year will be better than ever thanks to all the Halloween props and decorations I’m buying from Costume SuperCenter.

Plus Size Costumes are Sexy with More Curves to Love

September 29, 2009 in General Costumes by Lara Burke

ic5207For the plus size population, finding Halloween costumes used to be something difficult. Finding costumes that fit just right was not always easy. Often, you were stuck either wearing something too tight or tearing the sheets off the bed and making a toga.

The fact that the fashion and celebrity world equates deathly skinny with beautiful is as crazy as it is dangerous. Let’s face it, not everybody was meant to be a size 0 or even a 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10. In fact, the dress size of the average American women is a 14 and one-third of all American women wear a size 16 or larger.  Anyone who is not a single digit size should not be made to feel like a fashion outcast. Plus size women want to be stylish and sexy. They want the same choices as the skinny girls but cut to fit their proportions. They may not find it on the racks at their favorite department store but they will find it while shopping for Plus Size Halloween costumes and sexy plus size costumes at Costume SuperCenter.

Costume SuperCenter saw the need to outfit the plus size market with the widest variety of costumes for plus size consumers available on the internet.

Embrace your curves and love yourself as a sexy pirate, a sexy cop or a sexy superhero. The choices are numerous!

Men don’t find skinny women nearly as sexy as they find the women they love when they are comfortable with their bodies and uninhibited in their attitude. So go for it!

On the downside, it is doubtful that we will ever go back to the time when popular culture revered the models of artists such as Peter Paul Ruben as “Rubenesque” works of art or to a time in fashion when backsides were accentuated with bustles to make them look even bigger.  But what you can do is flaunt what you’ve got with pride because big is beautiful, plus size is sexy and attitude is everything!

It goes to show, you never know. You can’t go wrong with sexy costumes especially when they are available in both standard and plus sizes. When it comes to sexy, there are styles to fit every taste.  As for the clown costume, it is a tried and true contender all year long. For men’s costumes Popeye is the early favorite. Why Do We Dress Up and Get Candy at Halloween?

September 23, 2009 in Historical Costumes by Lara Burke

Have you ever wondered where this crazy tradition of Halloween came from and why we go around scaring each other and collecting candy? Me too, so I did some research.

The dictionary defines Halloween as “October 31, the eve of All Saints Day, celebrated in the United States, Canada, and the British Isles by children going door to door while wearing costumes and begging for treats and playing pranks.” We know it as a time when families carve pumpkins; decorate their home with deathly props and kids happily collect big sacks of candy. But how did Halloween come to be?

Some believe it is stemmed in religion but actually, its origins are pagan, dating back to the ancient Celts in Ireland and the Druids in the United Kingdom (you know, the dudes who built Stonehenge).  October 31 marked the end of the Druid calendar while November 1 marked the day they celebrated the Feast of Samhain. This was the one day of the year they believed there was no boundary between the living and the dead. Samhain was the great God of Death, who on October 31st would conjure up all the wicked souls who had died during the year. These wicked souls were believed to be roaming around in the bodies of animals as punishment for there evil deeds. Fearing these spirits would try to possess their bodies to reassume human form, the people built and burned giant bonfires to frighten the spirits away.  The people dressed in frightening animal skins so the evil spirits might mistake them for one of their own. They also made animal and human sacrifices to further prove their point to the evil spirits that they weren’t kidding around.

 bonfire-011

While the huge bonfire was burning, the Druids would extinguish the hearths in their homes and leave food on the doorstep in an attempt to prevent evil spirits from coming inside their houses. This is probably where the idea of give a treat first came into play.

Some time later when the Romans conquered the Celtic Territories, they celebrated a similar holiday on November 1st to honor Pomona, the goddess of orchards and fruit trees. This holiday celebrated the end of the harvest season and the passing of the dead.  The Romans would build great bonfires and roast apples and nuts to honor Pomona. This day was called Feralia.

Till that time, the Romans worshiped pagan gods. When the Romans began to adopt Christianity this celebration became a no-no. Paganism doesn’t fly with the Roman Catholic Church so to make the holiday more their own and further recruit followers of Christianity, the pope named November 1st All Saints Day to honor those who have passed. Therefore the day before was named All Souls Day, a day when Christians were asked to pray for the souls of the departed. This prayer would allow the souls in Purgatory to be cleansed of their sin and granted entrance into Heaven. Part of the tradition of All Souls Day was to leave an offering of food on their tables for the souls to share the feast (again, the reference to giving of treats). The Christians also lit candles in memory of their dead. All Souls Day was also referred to as All Hallows Eve and eventually, Halloween.

Today, Halloween is considered a secular holiday. Ghost stories and spooky props are for pure entertainment. The ghoulish and ghostly costumes meant to scare away evil spirits have given way to a variety of Halloween costumes from horror to humorous. Many children would much rather dress as a favorite superhero or television character. Today, no matter what they wear, the Halloween really boils down to one thing: Dressing up for CANDY, and lots of it!

Costume of the Week: Toddler Spiderman

September 21, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke
Spiderman Toddler Muscle Costume

Spiderman Toddler Muscle Costume

For the past two weeks the Toddler Spider-Man Muscle costume has been the best selling Halloween Costume item at CostumeSuperCenter.

Spiderman is one of the most popular of all the Marvel comic book superheroes. The commercial success of Spiderman in film, toys and merchandising has made Spiderman a top rated toy for young boys and a most recognized and adored hero.

When it comes to looking for a superhero to emulate who better than Spiderman? He attained his powers as a teen and had to learn how to use them with trial and error. In the process he learned that “with great power comes great responsibility.” The character makes little boys feel powerful, grown-up, brave and invincible. As far as boys costumes go, its pretty hard to beat

The Toddler Spiderman Muscle Chest costume features the bodysuit with a padded chest and arms to look like bulging muscles and the mask. The boots and gloves are sold separately at www.costumediscounters.com.

Summer is Over. Halloween is Coming. Are You Ready?

September 16, 2009 in Uncategorized by Lara Burke

pumpkinThe Halloween Season is here. For those of you who cling to summer as if your life depended on it, this is a sad but true fact. You cannot turn back the clock. The season is thrust upon us with unavoidable reality.  It may still be 80 degrees outside but the signs are everywhere. You’re house is suddenly quiet because your kids have returned to school.  Also, I bet you were late for work several days in a row because you’re still trying to time it so you don’t get stuck behind the school busses. But the kids returning to school isn’t even the most obvious sign that autumn is upon us. It’s all of the fall merchandising in our retail stores.

By mid August the summer items at my local supermarket were on clearance and picked clean to make way for an entire isle of Halloween candy. I can’t walk into drug stores, or big box retailers without being overcome by the smell of pumpkin and apple pie scented candles, and every farm market is selling with mums and winter cabbage. Last week, at my local pharmacy, as I rounded the corner toward the isle that sells back to school supplies I noticed it was completely transformed into a fall shopping fest. There were autumn wreaths, scarecrows, candles, plaques, candy, ceramic jars shaped like pumpkins, squash and gourds, and all of the yellow, brown, burgundy, and deep green I could handle while wearing a sundress and flip flops. I still hadn’t bought school supplies!! Now I need Halloween costumes and candy. Somebody stop the clock!

So even though it takes me some time, I accept what all the store merchandising is telling me. Summer is ending. September 21 may be the first official day of fall but summer is now unofficially over. Soon, I’ll feel that first morning chill that will clearly define the start of autumn. As I sadly say farewell to the warmth of the sun I look forward to our cache of Halloween candy, the warming fires in the patio fire pit and big roomy sweaters that hide the Halloween candy weight. And just as I have come to accept all that Halloween stuff in the stores so early I also accept the fact that I truly do love autumn and Halloween even if I have to give up my flip flops.

Mommy and Me Halloween Costumes

September 15, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Lara Burke

wwThis Halloween, how about making the trick or treating experience even more special by dressing up with your daughter. Whether you’re handing out candy or accompanying your daughter door to door, your added participation send the message to your daughter that you share her enthusiasm. There are so many adult costumes that match with kids costumes the combinations are innumerable.

Little girls idolize their moms and love to do things with them.   Now that my daughter is a preteen, we look back on our special mother/daughter memories such as having tea parties with her and her stuffed animals, having spa days when I would polish her nails and she would polish my nails (and fingers and portions of the towel I rested my hands on).  I would always dress up with her in her dress up clothes but we never had the chance to dress in costume together.  Not she’s too mature for dressing up.  If I could go back and do it again, here are some of the mother/daughter Halloween costumes I would pick:

I’m a fanatic for taking pictures. I wish I had some of those pictures to add to our family album. Kids grow so fast and you can’t get the time back. Even if you feel silly dressing up in matching costumes, its no more silly than dad feels while playing Barbie with his little girl. Your child will love it and you will be so happy you did it. Remember, it’s all about them.

Costume of the Week: Who’s Buying Banana Suits?

September 14, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Lara Burke

7102m

I overheard earlier today that a customer enquired about purchasing $6000 worth of Banana Costumes because he’s organizing a big company-wide promotion. This got me wondering what type of company it was and why a banana. Are they going bananas over new low prices? Are they a smoothie shop advertising the fresh fruit in their drinks or maybe an ice cream parlor having a run on banana splits?  And who has to draw the small straw to wear the costume. I can just picture somebody, feeling pretty silly, but nevertheless happy to be employed, standing on a street corner in a banana costume holding up a sign. What the sign says is just as intriguing as the choice of costume.

I have seen gorillas selling furniture, cows selling chicken and chickens selling mattresses but I have yet to see a banana with something to sell.

To do the math, a deluxe banana costume is currently on sale for $29.97. That means that somewhere in the United States there are soon to be 200 banana people out on the streets. So, if you happen to see a guy in a banana suit, let me know.
