Costume of the Week: Clubhouse Minnie Mouse

August 31, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke

di50105clubhouseminnieI love all things Disney. As a Disney Vacation Club Member, I have had the pleasure of visiting Walt Disney World 8 times since 2002.  One thing I never get tired of seeing at the parks are little girls dressed in their princess costumes. But not often enough do you see little girls dressed as the Disney’s female mascot, Minnie Mouse. Therefore, the costume of the week is the Clubhouse Minnie Mouse costume.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the princeses but I will save them for another blog.  This blog is devoted the adorable and timeless Minnie Mouse.

The Clubhouse Minnie Mouse costume is new for 2009 at CostumeSuperCenter.com.  It features a pink polka dot dress with a cameo of Minnie, and a matching headband with Minnie ears and a pink polka dot bow. This adorable dress resembles the one that Minnie wears on the animated Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on the Disney Channel.  It’s a cuter, younger version of Minnie’s tradition red and white polka dot dress and is geared toward toddlers and very young children.

This particular incarnation of Minnie Mouse is a sweet girl who interacts with a cast of Disney regulars as they teach very young viewers basic educational skills such as counting, identifying shapes, movement, speech and critical thinking.  All of their teaching is done in a very identifiably ”Disney” way.  Right from the start of the show when you must shout out the clubhouse password “Meeska Mooska, Mickey Mouse” it’s easy to see how small children find these Disney characters so captivating.  This show is interactive and full of music and catchy dialogue.  Best of all, it makes learning fun. Their personalities are so child friendly and Minnie’s sweet and gentle demeanor epitomizes femininity.

We highly recommend the Clubhouse Minnie Mouse costume not only for Halloween but for dress-up too. It will be your little girl’s favorite addition to her toy box. Imagine how cute she’ll look dressed as Minnie as she watches her favorite Disney show. And what bette role model for a sweet young lady like yours?

What is it With the Jonas Brothers?

August 28, 2009 in Celebrity Costumes by Lara Burke

My 12 year old daughter lives and breathes for the Jonas Brothers. These three brothers from New Jersey have taken the Disney loving tween world by storm.  Personally, I don’t mind. They are really sweet, wholesome guys. They’re the kind of boys you don’t mind your daughter dating. Some of their songs are really good too. I wouldn’t put their CDs on if she wasn’t in the car with me but I definitely find myself singing along even though to me they sound like they are writhing in pain, constipated and just been kicked in the privates. I’m still holding out hope that their voices are still changing because regardless of their voices, their songs are still catchy.

Nick Jonas is the youngest and is regarded as the leader of the band; the head songwriter and producer. He seems to be the most popular of the 3. He is also the most famous, having started his career on Broadway at the ripe old age of 7. If not for him and his discovery as a solo artist, the band may not have come to be.

Joe Jonas, the sexy, most exotic looking of the 3, favors the microphone but has instrumental skills that are on par with his brothers.  He is in a very close running as the cutest. For my daughter, it’s a tie with Nick but her opinion changes. I must say, he was really cute as Shane Gray in Camp Rock. He’s not the greatest actor but his chemistry with Demi Lovato who played Mitchie Torres was sweet.  By the way, you can find Shane and Mitchie Camp Rock Halloween Costumes at Costume SuperCenter.

As for Kevin Jonas, I feel bad for Kevin. It seems he is the least favored of the three bothers. He’s the oldest and the lead guitarist. Kevin prefers to stay away from the microphone and let his guitar do the singing, probably a smart idea. Fun and energetic, when we saw them live in concert he was the one I paid the most attention to. Recently, he announced his engagement at the age of 21. 21? It’s just too young. He must really take the purity ring thing seriously if he can’t wait “A Little Bit Longer.”

All jabs aside, props have to go to their parents. For all that can be publicly observed, the Jonas Brothers seem like responsible, grounded and well raised young men who want to make a difference to the world in many ways. Their future seems bright and I hope they have longevity is the fickle business of Pop music. Hopefully, their personal beliefs will remain and they won’t be seeing them on the covers of the tabloids like so many other young stars. As for the girls who love them, it will be interesting to see how these tweens and teens grow with the band.  After all, tween girls’ mind’s change like the wind blows.

Offbeat Holidays are Great for Costumes!

August 27, 2009 in Costume Adventures by Lara Burke

pirateCostumes are fun all year long. They are not just for Halloween.  In addition to major costume holidays like Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Fourth of July and Thanksgiving there are many offbeat, unofficial holidays that are great for wearing costumes.

If ever you need an excuse to get a bunch of friends together to dress up in costumes, these offbeat holidays are it. Who could deny what fun it would be to celebrate Cinco de Mayo dressed in Mexican serapes and sombreros? How about September 19th which is Talk Like a Pirate Day? Imagine your friends using pirate lingo, dressed like pirates and drinking some run punch. Fun, huh?

Here’s a list of offbeat holidays that we think are great for dressing up:

  • January 14 National Dress Up Your Pet Day – dress your pooch in pet costumes or dress you and your pet in matching costumes
  • January 18 - Winnie the Pooh Day – dress your kids as Pooh character and have a party

  • February – Mardi Gras and Valentines – beads, masks, Mardi Gras costumes, cupids, sexy lingerie and Valentine’s costumes - February is my favorite month for dressing up
  • February 4 - Gumby’s Birthday. “I am Gumby Damit!” Makes me laugh every time.
  • March 2 – Dr. Suess’ Birthday - Dr. Suess’ Birthday is widely celebrated in elementary schools across America. This is a great opportunity for teacher and students alike to don their Cat in the Hat red and white striped top hats and remember this beloved children’s author.
  • March 27 – Quirky County Music Song Title Day – think cowboy hats, mullets and the sort
  • April 11 – Barbershop Quartet Day

Costume of the Week: The Kate Gosselin Wig

It’s not very often you can purchase a wig for Halloween and have it be your entire costume. However, in the case of the Eight is Too Much Wig, the hairpiece speaks for itself. The Eight is Too Much wig is a replica of the signature, face framing in the front, spiked high in the back hair style made infamous by Kate Gosselin of the TV reality show Jon and Kate Plus Eight.

 eight-is-too-much-wig

You don’t need any elaborate costume or outfit. Whatever you are wearing will do. Just plop that wig on your head and you’ll be instantly transformed into Kate. It is very doubtful anyone will ask, “Who are you supposed to be?”

Is she a wonder woman who can manage 8 kids as a single parent and still have time to do her hair or a complete phony that travels around with an entourage of stylists and nannies who do everything while she sits around like a princess? Whether you love her or love to hate her, there is no denying that Kate is a common topic around the water cooler these days and Costume SuperCenter foresees the Eight Is Too Much Wig to be a top selling Halloween costume this year. You can find it at www.costumesupercenter.com for $14.99

To me, it looks like a bad 80’s British pop band haircut. Others feel it is chic and contemporary. What do you think?

Woodstock Turns 40, Get Your Hippie Costumes Now!

49370fr

Last week we marked the 40th anniversary of the music festival Woodstock which ran from August 15 – 18, 1969. Woodstock brought us peace, love, granola and the most memorable music event in history. It also showcased the distinctive fashion sense and lifestyle that defined the Hippie generation.

The new movie Taking Woodstock is set to release on August 28th. The movie details how Woodstock found its venue on Max Yazgur’s farm and recounts the stories of the festival and music that defined the hippie generation. With all of the publicity commemorating the 40th anniversary of Woodstock and the release of the movie, the Hippie style is forecasted to be a top selling costume for Halloween. Many hippy costumes are available at www.costumesupercenter.com

For many teens and young adults, Taking Woodstock will be their first exposure not only to the Woodstock music festival but to the peace and love vibe of the hippy generation.  The movie may serve as the portal for the younger generations to get a sense of the attitude, the style and the personality of the Hippy movement.

 hippie-chic1

Today’s teens, much like the teens of the Woodstock generation share the same concerns. In 1969 the country was in a recession, we were fighting a senseless war and young adults were concerned for the state of the world, the environment and their economic future. In the midst of all of the turmoil, hippies maintained that love, peace and working together were the way to change the world.  The philosophy of the hippie generation should speak volumes to today’s youth. Are you ready for a 60’s revival?

Costume of the Week, Week 5: GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra

August 17, 2009 in Costume Trends by Lara Burke

di50370gi-joe

Costume SuperCenter’s costume of the week is GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. I’m not a comic book aficionado and always thought GI Joe was a lone, Rambo style commando soldier. The movie has opened my eyes to the fact that GI Joe is actually an elite military unit.  The movie, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, is set 10 years into the future and follows two American soldiers, Duke and Ripcord, who join the G.I. Joe Team after being attacked by Cobra troops.

In a broad nutshell, Cobra leaders, McCullen and the Doctor, create a nanotechnology warhead that they plan to use to dominate the world and it’s up to GI Joe to stop them. GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra shows how Cobra came to be and how the main characters Duke and Ripcord rose to become the elite GI Joe Soldiers. It is filled with twists and action sequences.  The movie culminates with a cliff hanger that screams of a sequel. No wonder, a sequel has already been announced.

As of August 16, 2009, the GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra has grossed $98.7 million at the domestic box office with $66.1 million from other countries with a total of $164.9 million worldwide. Hasbro’s merchandising for the movie is top of the line, including the officially licensed Halloween costumes and accessories.  The currently popularity of the movie as well as the announcement of the sequel will make GI Joe costumes best sellers for years to come. Costume Supercenter features Duke, Snake Eyes, and from the Cobra force, Storm Shadow.

Art Mann Proves that America Loves Costumes All Year Round

Art Mann is the man! He hosts the show Art Mann Presents on HDNet.  As a huge fan of his show I love how he manages to find fabulous festivals across the U.S.A. that involve costumes, revelry and debauchery.  If someone is dressing up, drinking, partying, celebrating and then puking, Art Mann is there. He has demonstrated that grown-ups have a basic human need to look, feel and act silly once in a while.  My husband and I, like many others, live vicariously through Art Mann Presents.

Last night we watched Art Mann Presents as Art traveled to Reno for the Superhero Pub Crawl. For 3 years running, Reno has hosted The Superhero Put Crawl where visitors dress as superheroes, both popular and made-up, and drink their way from bar to bar in the name of charity. Yes, a good time was had by all. Remind me to go to Reno someday.

Some of the other episodes I have thoroughly enjoyed watching (and this is by no means a complete list) are:

  • The Gasparilla Pirate Fest – Tampa’s annual festival to celebrate the pirate invasion of Jose Gasparilla. For over 30 years, people dress as pirates and celebrate.
  • The Pimp and Ho Ball – sexy costumes and lingerie galore, not to mention all sorts or adult toys and naughty delights.
  • Halloween in Hollywood – Need we say more! Just imagine the craziness of Hollywood and an endless variety of Halloween costumes.
  • The Doo Dah Parade in Pasadena where marchers and spectators dress in costumes in honor of the arts, organized by the Light Bringer Project, a nonprofit Pasadena-based cultural arts organization.

I strongly suggest you check your local listings for the re-runs of these episodes on HDNet. For those of you who are more adventurous than me, I hope you have an opportunity to attend one of these events. If you do, be sure to get your costumes, accessories and props from Costume SuperCenter.

Art Mann and the wonderful partiers of these great United States have proven that costumes are fun all year round. People just love the opportunity to step outside the box and do something fun and crazy. Dressing up in costumes just seems to go hand-in-hand with having a good time. The show is a great vehicle to showing us that it’s OK to let our hair down and it’s good for the soul, even it is does give you a hangover.

The Summer List

August 13, 2009 in Uncategorized by Lara Burke

It’s already the second week in August. Summer is almost over. Where does it go? Every year I find myself asking the same question at about the same time. At the start of every summer I always make a list. It’s my to-do list of goals that I’d like to accomplish before the summer is over.  Like every year before, I never get to fulfill everything on my list. It’s not even like these things are monumental, they’re just regular things that I should be doing anyway, yet I find them nearly impossible to do. My list each year I looks something like this:

  • Spend lots of time outdoors
  • Cook all my meals on the grill so my kitchen stays clean
  • Lose the winter weight gain and wear lots of pretty summer dresses
  • Keep the garden and flower beds weed free
  • Never let the laundry pile up for the weekend
  • Go to the beach every sunny Sunday
  • Grow my own organic vegetables
  • Have get-togethers with friends on a regular basis

Between work and this summer’s iffy weather, I have definitely not spent as much time outside as I had hoped. Weight loss – nope – gained 4 pounds from grilling all sorts of outdoor BBQ and guess what…my kitchen is still a mess. The flowers beds have weeds, the Topsy Turvey only produced 16 tomatoes, I’m stuck doing piles of laundry every Sunday and that cocktail/pool party just can’t seem to get itself together.  So I’m not Martha Stewart (but I wish I was).

I believe I have a solution to this problem. My list is BORING! Maybe what I need to do next year is come up with an extraordinary list of things to do. This way I won’t feel so bad if things don’t get done. And if I do manage to complete even one item on the list it would be something worth remembering. Something extraordinary.

Here is my list for next year:

  • Learn to surf
  • Sing at a Karaoke bar
  • Go Parasailing
  • Swim with dolphins
  • Go Jet Skiing
  • Eat out every night at fine restaurants instead of cooking

Sounds like a vacation. TAKE A VACATION!!! That’s it! I can accomplish everything on next year’s list if I take a vacation! Everything on my list accomplished in one glorious week, why didn’t I think of this before. I’ll pack up my Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts and not worry about that winter weight.  I’ll do all sorts or crazy things and not worry about a single item on that old, boring list.  I may have missed the boat this year but the weeks will just fly by until next summer. I have all year to deal with the first list. From now on, I’ll let the summers be extraordinary!

Costume of the Week, Week 4: The Elvis Costume

The end of this week, August 16th, marks the 32nd anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death. To honor the king, the costume of the week is the Elvis costumeelvis-r56238.  His white studded jumpsuit is the epitome of Vegas kitsch. You instantly feel a sense of showmanship when you put it on.

Elvis’ career began more than half a century ago in 1954. His musical style broke racial barriers while his dance moves pushed the boundaries of censorship. He created a pathway for teen rebellion and self expression that is the hallmark of rock music. Now 3 decades after his death his name and likeness are still synonymous with rock and roll, sex appeal and cool.

His great music and die-hard fans have forever engrained him as The King of Rock and Roll. Today, there are over 500 Elvis fan clubs in the United States alone. Las Vegas is home to the Elvis Museum and is overflowing with Elvis impersonators. There is even a chapel where you can be married by an Elvis priest. In Memphis, the birthplace of Elvis, there is Graceland, his home and final resting place, where some 600,000 visitors come each year to tour the mansion and pay tribute to his life. Worldwide, there are innumerable annual Elvis Festivals proving his relevance is still strong.

Costume SuperCenter has dozens of Elvis costumes and Elvis-like costumes to choose from, including pet costumes. Celebrate Elvis Week with Elvis costumes for the entire family. Elvis Halloween costumes are always best sellers. Elvis is in the building!!!!! Visit www.costumesupercenter.com today.
